View Full Version : what's the best pop screen under $500?
is that metal cheeze grater thing that shoots the spit and wind down
better than a standard pop screen?
is a simply home-made job more transparent than a popper stopper? (the
popper stopper has two membranes separated by the hoop)
p.s. a little humour about the "under $500" since it seems that
everyone on the planet must ask r.a.p. what the best vocal mic is
under $500

Yes.

No, it's about the same.

The Stedman (also badged as Royer) is the best pop screen I've used. It's more
sonically transparent and stops plosives better than the nylon Popper Stopper
types.

I think so, at least they're more effective at stopping plosives. But
using anything between the source and the microphone is always a
compromise becuase it filters more than one thing.

Depends on the material. A couple of years back, Brad Lunde
(Transamerica Audio) was showing a pop screen from Germany that looked
like your averave two sided hoop and cost about $300. He said it
worked better than anything else, both at stopping posives and not
stopping anything else important. They're now available on-line at
http://www.transaudiogroup.com. And, no, I don't have one (but
thinking about it).

Both Stedmans are good. The Neumann is also very good. The plastic rim
things I can hear.

Make a clothes hanger in a circle, wrap panty hose around it and you have a pop
filter for under $5.00.

Actually, that will work, but I find it a little too flimsy.
I use a crochet hoop with the hose, hooked to a broken mic clip and a gooseneck
hooked to an atlas CO-1B.
The product is heavier and doesn't move when presented with a plosive.
You could just buy a popper stopper or a Stedman.
Better yet, learn to sing without popping. I still use pop screens to keep
berath off the diaphragm.

....and it's well under $500.
