This newsgroup (alt.music.midi) is the WRONG place for
regularly posted commercial advertisements, binary
postings of any sort, test messages, eBay ads, and
requests for MIDI files. Occasional ads for sale of
used PERSONAL gear are OK.
Potential buyers of WAV-to-MID conversion software BEWARE!
To avoid severe disappointment, try the demo and freeware
versions before buying. Inspect the converted files very
carefully to see that you can edit them. See the FAQ at

and for URLs to 23 pieces of software, some free.
This MINI-FAQ is posted weekly (Fri or Sat) to
the newsgroup alt.music.midi to:
1. Provide an overview of the newsgroup without the
burden of posting the full FAQ. (142KB)
2. Answer a few questions that are repeated so often
that many feel like screaming when seeing them.

Please look over the full ALT.MUSIC.MIDI FAQ and read
a week or so worth of articles before posting questions.
The FAQ is well indexed, with hyperlinks, and it answers
most of the usual beginning questions and contains URLs
pointing to websites with more advanced information.
Do NOT post in HTML! Do NOT post attachments! Turn off
V-Cards! Keep your signature short. Trim unnecessary quoted
text from your replies. Limit cross-posting and responses to
groups where it is really appropriate. Use private e-mail to
communicate things not of general interest to the whole group.
If helping someone requires sending a file to them, do it via
e-mail or via posting on your web site for download.
English is the preferred language and will reach the largest
audience. If you don't speak English, use what you know best.
Everyone is welcome here regardless of language.
Requests for pirated software and help with pirated software
are *extremely* unwelcome. Please ignore such requests if you
see them.
USE DESCRIPTIVE TITLES if you want your posted articles to be
read. Don't say "Help with Urgent Problem;" say something
specific like "Help With Sysex on Yamaha PSR-510!"
This MINI FAQ mostly covers topics related to etiquette in the
interest of keeping the group enjoyable for everyone to read.
The full FAQ located at

more specific MIDI-related information.
My goal for the FAQ is that it cover the basics well enough that
newcomers to MIDI can either find answers or find pointers to
answers. I do not see it as a direct source of highly detailed
advanced information. There are a number of excellent sites that
supply this sort of information and I'll be glad to list the most
outstanding ones in the FAQ as they come to my attention. Feel
free to bring them to my attention.
If you can provide a short writeup to fill in any gaps in the
full FAQ, or have comments on the full FAQ, or on the MINI FAQ,
please feel free to do so. Please don't e-mail me the whole
FAQ if you make comments on it (I already have it), or copies
of programs you think are interesting, or other large
attachments - they will not reach me.
If members of other MIDI newsgroups would like to have this MINI
FAQ posted in their newsgroups please contact me.
