The Walnut stain verdict...

Looks like I should be ok. I tried to get any slightly lighter areas, some
wouldn't darken up. It's probably too late to go back over them, but
overall, I'm satisfied. Getting the colors right wasn't really an issue; all
the wrap (except the bottom of the kick) were from the same sheet of veneer
so I don't know what I was worried about. I thought I was going to take my
time and be neat... once I plopped the first glob onto the kick I was off
and running in an effort to cover the whole drum before drying. Also, I only
had to use like 1/3rd my can of stain, which was a half pint. I hope the
colors don't differ because of that though, in the long run... I was using
large globs of the stain on the kick, and did it with much smaller doses on
the 13"... hope that doesn't show. But anyhow, the veneer didn't come ot
quite as flat as I thought at first, you can definetly see some bumpiness
and lumps and stuff. But I think it looks ok; again, I'm satisfied.

So I should be able to start a'varnishin' tomorrow. If I wake up early I can
maybe get 2 coats on before work... This, I don't forsee any problems with.
Just going to rag it on and rag it off, do one coat each drum, let dry,
nother coat each drum, let dry, nother coat each drum... etc etc. This kit
should be assembled by next weekend. I haven't had any luck in the 'getting
used real Ludwig inlay-able hoops' department, so I have to hit
Drummaker.com for a pair.

This is when the project starts REALLY looking rewarding.

Nah, until the varnish goes on, it's never too late. Another coat
on a light area usually tweeks it in. Just be sure to let it
dry well before you start judging colors. On some drums
I've put the stain on and washed it off several times
until I was satisfied. The look does change a tad (for the better)
once the varnish goes on, but then you're locked in.
