hi guys,
My turkish 18" crash has started to crack. The crack is not
perpendicular to the cymbal (not from the edge towards the bell) but is a
round crack following the circle of the cymbal but a coupla cms further in.
Is that understandable? anyway, is there something I can do to avoid
further cracking/make it last a little longer?
thx

When a circulat crack starts at or near the bell, its usually time to
get a new cymbal.
This type of crack can start if you have the cymbals screwed up tight on
the stand, so that they are not free to move when hit.
You could possibly try get the cracked brazed, but I don't have any
experience of how well such repairs last.

Not much you can do to stop the crack from spreading. I had an old A
Zildjian 16" stencil-logo crash many years ago that cracked like yours. I
took it to my local music store, and they used a jewelers loupe (magnifying
lense) to find the ends of the crack. Then, using an 1/8" drill bit, drilled
holes at both ends of the crack. This stopped the progression of the crack
for about a year. Eventually I had to ditch the cymbal, as the crack started
to migrate again. Make sure your cymbals can move freely on the stands;
don't tighten the wing nuts down too much.
You could use the cymbal for special effects. Stack it with another cymbal
to get some trashy, white noise, fast accents. The crack would probably help
you in that case.

Like this - the flailing bits shred my sticks, but I don't want to risk
cutting them off incase it messes with the sound :)
Though it may sound 'better' - hmmm, back in a bit ;)

I've never had any luck repairing this kind of crack... the cymbals a goner.
But don't throw it out! I find if you tuck ol' crackies away for 6 months
and then pull them out again, you can look at them with a fresh perspective
and maybe find use for it again as an effect or something. It's always a
sad day when cracks come a knockin'.

Time to put some rivets in it and use it as a jazz ride of effects
cymbal. I did this to a cracked 17 Paiste Sig and it's now one of
my favorites.
