Also have good luck with Cumbersome...seven mary three. Of course, most of our stuff is working pretty well, they just seem to go extra nutz over these.

I'm right there with you guys who don't like the Khe Sahn, Brown Eyed Girl. Thier the ones you go to sleep and think about what you're doing the next day while you're playing then. Ha Ha!!

I think mu biggest song are all the oz rock like Better-Screaming Jets, comin Home-the Radiators, Like Wow-Hoodoo Gurus!

thought. I'd just answer both questions.

And I'm pretty sure that Neil Diamond wrote I'm a beleiver and that was the Monkeys first hit! Could be wrong though!

lostdave
11-27-2002, 11:34 PM
100% Correct Besty...
Neil(the god that he is) wrote I'm a believer..was performed by the Monkeys...then Neil performed it @ about 14 shows or somthing...then nothing heard of it till Shrek

Great song.. I love the way Smashmouth breathed new life into it...and I am sure Neil is happy about the xtra royalties...not that he needs them ;)

My Fav song performance wise @ the moment is Screaming Jets - Better...which is really interesting considering I have A chickie singer. But somehow it seems to work.

Oh and Complicated - avril Lavigne....first setter material.

Last Friday we were playing in a pub. We like it there because we get to play Oasis, Stereophonics etc... We did Suspicious Minds for the youths in the audience and after one more song a slightly inebriated person' ...ahem....came up and said
"Play Elvis"
"We just played Elvis," I replied patiently replied..
"Play another one"
"We don't do any more" we lied (we just didn't want to)
"Ye must know more Elvis"
"Sorry... haven't got them with us"
(incidently ... a lot of this happened in the MIDDLE of a song ... er .... HELLO ... I'm actually PLAYING at the minute)
AT last ... he sat down...

After another song ... Back he came ...
"Play Elvis " as if the conversation had never taken place
"Sorry Mate... haven't go any" and so it went...

Our hero went to the toilet and his girlfriend put in a request for him.... Yup.... Elvis....
"We've already done Elvis" etc... etc...

Another song .... up he comes again ... "Play Elvis" ... slightly more slurred. By this time we were really pissed off.... We ARE NOT doing Elvis .... We're SICK of ELVIS... IN FACT... WE FeCKIN' HATE ELVIS....."

A strange look came over his face ... he paused ... he thought ... the cogs in his head turned and he said ...

"Do you know Blue Suede Shoes????"

We roared ... I suppose you had to be there ... A real 'Father Ted' ... Dougal Maguire' moment ...

Anyone else know the feeling?????

regards... Woodsy

Something similar was in Coleraine when a girl asked us to play some country. We said we only do one country song and that is Dwight Yokham, Fast as You.

We played it.

2 songs later she came up ask asked, "When are you gonna do that country song then?"

Mabye we rock it up too much!!

Might start a drummers joke thread! Plenty of those to tell hey!!

I think that over this past few years, around most bars you can now play a much broader set than say even 6 or 7 years ago. Back then around this part of the world (N Ireland) it was all Garth Brooks american country and middle of the road in most venues. Nowadays in most bars we get more and more requests for hard rock. This suits me as I am an 80's thrash child. I think that this is due to a demographic effect, that is people who are drinking in bars now ie 20 - 40 grew up with when great rock music was really hip eg Appetite for Destruction. When you think about it Nevermind has reached it's 10th birthday.

I say if your still playing Brown Eyed Girl to fill the floor stop it! Take a chance, don't throw it away just don't play it unless your asked for it. Challenge yourself and your audience I know that I would rather finish the night with a whole lotta rosie than past the point of rescue.

Cheers

Seamy

I would have to agree seamyD....
WE are playing to the heavier side of Life...but for us it is very Venue dependent...as It is for most ppl..

We couldn't get away with what we play @ niteclub in some of our pub gigs and Vice versa...

It still comes down to playing to the room.....wether you like hte music or hate it..

I would prefer to play only stuff I like...but it is unlikely that anyone would continue to come to our gigs ;)

Well, I suppose in this day and age it's appropriate to try and do top 40 tunes etc. (which we do).
However the songs that go over best are classic rock songs.
The response we get when we throw in "Never Been Any Reason by Head East" is phenomenal.
My favorites are:
1.) April Wine - Tonight Is A Wonderful Time To Fall In Love
2.) Payola$ - Eyes Of A Stranger
3.) The Who - Who Are You/Won't Get Fooled Again
4.) Red Rider - Lunatic Fringe

As you can see, mostly Canadian content from a Canucker. There are others - Thin Lizzy - Whiskey In The Jar - that are multi-generational thanks to Metallica's remake.
A drummer I know, when his band was asked to play "any Metallica" would break into "For Whom The Bell Tolls". This is particularly funny cause it was back when "One" was poplular. The requestor and his friends would sit there with dumb looks on their faces thinking "what the hell is this heavy sh*#?"

Another thing we would do is if someone asked for "Elvis" we would play Cheap Trick's version of Don't Be Cruel or another song completely like "like A Hurricane by Neil Young" and tell them that Elvis did a cover of it etc. . It's so hard not to mock the drunks!

I'm have a acoustic duet called "Just Duet". We've been playing for approx. 5 years now. We find that the acoustic version of "This Flight Tonight" by nazareth leads the up to a rocking ending with cumbersome (7 mary 3) and "No excuses" by Alice in Chains to follow.

60's and 70's stuff still rocks man, we can fill the dancefloor with any of the funky 70's disco stuff or have the guys rockin to some ogood old kinks or troggs (obviously a heavier more rocked up version of the 60's)

Brown eyed girl is THE most requested song in Australia. Second is Keh Sahn (for the non-Australians reading this, it is THE most overated song in history, by a band call Cold Chisel who, for some reason that escapes me, are revered like Gods here). I'll still play Van but NOT Chisel (well - a very drunk biker crowd could well persuede me.....).

But other songs that are crowd pleasers.....

Too many times - Mental as anything (Aussie band)

Baker Street (Note - I play in a duo with a sax player, so it's always requested)

Stuck in the middle

I personally love opening with Crunchy Granola Suite (complete with 30 secs of orchestral opening).

Cheers all

I've been gigging for about 14 years, some of which were spent just doing originals. Now I just do covers and I don't rely on it for a living anymore, which takes the pressure off big time. I almost only do stuff these days that I really enjoy doing, like;
Elvis Costello
Warren Zevon
lesser known Beatles tracks like Golden Slumbers
Died Pretty
Stevie Wonder etc etc
This seems to please some of the people all of the time, and I've never enjoyed performing more. There's no better feedback than when someone comes up and says "I've never heard anyone cover 'XYZ song' and I love that song, good stuff mate." or "Great mix of songs mate, really different", which I get quite alot. So I encourage you to boldly play the stuff you love and try and drag the audience along with you. Arrogant as it sounds, alot of punters need their tastes broadened.

I have sung 'King of the road' by roger miller as my second song almost every night for my 23 year carear and I still love doing it 'cause it always gets a reaction when I go quiet on 'cigarettes' and the audience realise they sang it on their own.

Best Years of our Lives-Modern Romance (cheesy but everyone gets up)
Come Up and See Me- Steve Harley & Cockney Rebel
I Predict a Riot- Kaiser Chiefs
Crazy Little Thing Called Love and Fat Bottomed Girls -Queen

Something-The Beatles
Still Got the Blues-Gary Moore
