Yes, CoolEdit is for wav files (I prefer WaveLab though! ;)).
As far as for the sequencer: it's just me, but I like to sequence with a real songsheet, i.e. with scores, not only with note values. For that, I think the MidiSoft (they've got a homepage) Software is a very good choice. Simple, but still very versatile and professional. To add additional wav files (real instrument and vocals) I import my midis into Cakewalk, which, I think, is also very easy to use (after a while...! ;)) and where I can give them the final touch and the finetuning.

I have cubase, cakewalk, protools, and a few others but emagics logic audio platinum is amazing! you can do the usual midistuff and you can use samples put as many effects using audio, so you can record your vocals in and make them sounds amazing so I recomend logic anyday!!

if want to do only MIDI, then any of new "big" sequencers will do the work ( CubaseVST/SX,LogicAudio ). But an Atari with an old Cubase or Emagic Notator is also cool 4 midi only...

I tend to use Cubase - good and powerful app, but of you don't know anything about midi then you might not know where to start!

Sonar 2.0XL is my choice. The new DXI instruments almost make it unecessary for sound modules... just a great digital sound card.

I use a Yamaha QY100 which is a sequencer box plus sound. Has great sounds and very easy to program/adapt songs.
If you are a performer, then this box is quick, fairly cheap and does a nice job.

I use cubase, have done for 6 years. Use logic for audio and have had a play with the midi, it looks better, more user friendly. Both do the job, but when you decide, make sure you stick with the one you choose, and learn all the functions, it helps in the long run

If you want quick midifiles, band in a box or jammer produce reasonable files quite quickly and easily, until you get the hang of it, then go to cubase, logic, etc, at a later date. Only drawback is they work on preset bars, so you can't adjust single, notes, but that's for later.

i love logic platinum, and have been using it for years, but from September they are becoming Mac only, because they were bought out by Apple.

Geeze ziggy, i've gone all red. Glad you liked the files. Like I said pick a program that has full editing features, once you are familiar with how midifiles work, then stick at it. I find that if you want quick files that sound reasonably close to the song you are trying to recreate, go band in a box, or if wanting to take a step further, cubase or similar and cut-and-paste. I use a keyboard and play in all the notes bit by bit, ie, hats, kick-snare, toms, keys, etc.

ps, if anyone could use a little help with sequencing in cubase, just ask, I'll help if I can, as no doubt others in the forum will.

I just got Sonar 2.0xl and when you consider the soft synths it comes with and the price it is hard to beat. It is fairly user friendly. I was doing basic audio and midi recording with out consulting the manual.
Get a good sound card with low latency monitoring and you have a smoking rig for cheap.

The best sequencer is the one you know how to use. There are many many choices out there. I've been using Cakewalk 5.0 (DOS) for years. Why? Cuz it's the one i know so I'm silly fast on it.
Good luck finding your favorite.

I use Cakewalk Sonar for my midi sequencing. I've been using Cakewalk products for almost 5 years now (I started with Cakewalk Pro Audio v4.5). Sonar is a very powerful sequencer. I use it for sequencing and on stage for live performance....
Logic 5 is THE best midi program available! No question!!!!!!

i am using sonar 2.0, and guitar pro 3.0.
i just know how to play the guitar, so guitar pro is just fine. i use it to make the tracks.
however, i use sonar 2.0 to make all the tracks fixed to sound as a piece of music. and record the all the things

I started off with Notator on the Atari in 1995, went to Cubase and have never looked back!! I am however, using Reason by Propellorheads. I think you guys should SERIOUSLY look at this program..........you'll probably never use anything else ever again.

I have been using Cakewalk since 1997. I started off not really knowing what sequencing was all about but using Cakewalk taught me a lot rather quickly and easily!!

I would try Melody Assistant. That's what I use... It's great. Lot's of features and is only $15 to register. It has it's own music format, but you can export in a couple different midi formats.
Download it and try it:

The Best For PC is Cakewalk Sonar or Pro Audio 9
For Mac my understanding is that Digital performer is the best (by MOTU)

Cubase is good. But its a lot to do with personal preferences. Get one that suits you best. I was using Sequencer+ Gold for many years in DOS, even used it on stage on a 286.
