Yamaha Keyboard and Karaoke files

Hi Folks.

I`m a little bit confused.

When i play some karaoke files (.mid instaed .kar) the lyrics are shown in VanBasco Player.
When i put the file on a disk and put it in my Yamaha Keyboard is no lyric shown.

Why this ? Some files work, others do not !?

Have to say I've noticed the same thing. I tried opening them in different programmes but can't seem to find out.

There are two reasons (and maybe more) why vanBasco karaoke player will display lyrics for midi files when the Yamaha keyboards will not.

It would seem that for midi files to display lyrics on Yamaha keyboards, the midi file must be format 0 and not format 1. vanBasco doesnt care.

Further, I suspect that if you "convert" a file using the Yamaha keyboard (using RECORD, NEXT, select file NEXT, and say "Yes") it will convert a format 1 file into a format 0 file apart from doing other stuff.

Also, you should be aware that some software creates "Text events" to hold lyrics within midi files. This is wrong. They should create "Lyric events". For safety, the vanBasco karaoke player treats both "Text events" and "Lyric events" as lyrics.

Yamaha keyboards do not treat "Text events" as lyrics.

I think that just about covers it. Hope this was enlightening!

That`s the points i thought about, too.

I think i saved the second file in another format.

I work with XG Works so i can save in SF0, SF1, SF, xws and so on.

In simple TERMS the file that your Yamaha cant display the lyrics are what we call .kar instead of .mid now you can convert from .kar to .mid with a shareware program called GNMIDI, you can download it and use it for some time then you have to buy, try it out and see if it works.

ziggy, i'm afraid this is confusing the matter.

Most .Kar files seem to be in fact Standard Midi Files (ie they are .mid files, but with a different file type). People have been using .kar to indicate if they have put lyrics into a .mid file.

However, I suspect that some software is available which uses a different format entirely but uses .kar as the file type.

This means that you there are potentially different formats being used for .kar files.

Hi Gandalf,
I was trying to explain in simple terms.
.KAR is just like .MId but still there are older keyboards wich can't read .KAR, now the difference comes the way the LYRICS are EMBEDED.

I try to be simple so most understand.

.KAR have the lyrics EMBEDED as TEXT EVENT and normally they can't be read by keyboards whick can't play .KAR

.MID have the lyrics EMBEDED as lyrics and not TEXT EVENT.

Now you can get .mid with lyrics embeded but you can't say that, that file is .KAR if any of you have CAKEWALK you can understand what I mean.

There is other forms how to embed LYRICS like System Exlusive but we leave that on the side.

Hi guys,

Here's some other things that cause problems.

1. Ensure you use single quote and not that similar character.
2. Avoid parentheses, ie ( and )
3. if your songs intro is long, put some dummy notes into the melody at the start and add the title and artist. long intros screw up the yamaha also!!
