It's going to be about Music Copyright Piracy on the internet. History, current issues, new laws, etc.

Before 2 weeks ago, I hadn't bought a cd in about 2 years. Until Ludacris Chicken and Beer came out, of course. But really i dont see any point in buying if u can get it free. I mean, most artists are set for life anyways. They dont need the extra money. what are they gonna do with it. buy a new ferrari?

I'll be honest, in all my life i've bought about 3 cd's(I'm 13). I never really liked music when i was younger, and have always been using kazaa to make cd's

I think that downloading music would help artists. In the past couple of months, I have bought three CDs because I liked a file I downloaded. If I have never heard an artist, I'm not going to buy the CD unless I know I like them.

kazaa lite is the way to go. I download my music because its a lot easier than going to the store and buying a cd with one or two good songs on it. artists should start producing better stuff before they complain about filesharing. Filesharing allows you to not get screwed paying 20 bucks for a crappy cd.

I never use Kazaa, or any other of those programs...
The program itself isn't illegal, as you might know, but too many people use it in a illegal way...
Example 1:
You find a cd in a music shop, and put in your pocket. You walk out of the shop, with the cd in your pocket, while thinking: "Why buy it, if I can get it for free?"...this is called stealing, and is illegal, right?
Example 2:
You're downloading illegal music files to your computer, and are thinking: "Why buy it, if I can get it for free?"...but this isn't stealing?? this isn't illegal?? I cant see much difference between those two situations, but maybe thats just me...;)
But if they shut down Kazaa, people will just use another program...
And maybe I understand, that some people want to listen to the music, before they buy it...
But think...what did people do, back in those days, when there were no Kazaa?

I think that a lot of the reason for the increase in file-sharing has to be due to the hikes in prices for CDs nowadays where they are disproportionately priced to other items. For example a music CD can cost you £15 or £4 for a single, I mean some sites like www.cdwow.com can sell you a disc at £8 which is a decent buy but frankly there are also a large rise in the amount of *&*&*&*&ty 'fillers' on the average disc that I hate spending money on discs I may listen to once or twice then crop the good tracks to burn a compilation.

I kinda got scared about the whole thing with RIAA and i went and bought a few cds, which i weren't dissapoint about. Now i just download the songs see if i like the songs or not, so if i do like it i might go out and buy the album. It all depends on this though $$$$

Well, if you don't like all the 'fillers', as you call them, you can just buy the good songs as Mp3 files, over the internet...thats fully legal, no problem in that...

I use Kazaa Lite but mostly for videos than audio as of late. The whole RIAA scare put me off, but I'll occasionally look for a single track, not a whole album. If I like an artist and their album (not just a track or two), I'll buy the CD.

Yeah, i seen a link sayin something like "napster's back" in big letters, so i clicked on it, and i got a plain page with the napster icon on it and a "download now" option.
Didn't downloads it though as i use kazaa lite, and not as many people will have downloaded it yet.

i download a fair amount of tunes, but it has also resulted in me buying a lot more CDs than I would have. Tis a great way to decide whether a band is worth buying their CD, or discover new bands you would have just flicked past in the shop!

AustinPowers
11-10-2003, 06:08 AM
When using these P2P "peer to peer" sharing program's, you are/could be opening up a BIG security breech on your PC, I'm an IT manager and I am basically kept in-undated with private job's to sort out PC's that use these sort of P2P program's, as many of them will expose your PC, and could easily give access to file's etc.
Also many file's that are downloaded contain trojan's etc, so if your going to use these type of prog's then make sure you have an up to date Anti Virus prog etc.

But think...what did people do, back in those days, when there were no Kazaa?
***
Well, back in the good ol' days record stores had sound booths that you could go and listen to the record before deciding to buy.
I download music for one purpose. To learn cover songs for gigs. It used to be I had to spend ungodly amounts of money for an album or CD to be able to get one lousy song off. Either that or spend all day waiting in front of the radio with my finger on the cassette's record button. Downloading music has saved me tons of time and money, which means we club musicians get to keep more of what little we make!!!
brc 103
11-14-2003, 01:53 AM
i have been known to download music but the best way to describe it is i will buy the cd if i like it, but heres a thought, its far easier to download a song then if the bands good buy the cd, save a long time dl'ing! However thats on dial up, be interested to see what happens when more and more people get broadband here!
I've given up on kazaa (even kazaa lite) but to everyone who complains about viruses i would say' you dont get them downloading mp3's' - theyre mostly on software or porn! (caught LOL)
i do however use irc, its the safest way and you'll actually get to talk to the guys who can tell you which songs are good.
brc103 reminisses --ahh the days of napster, we miss you.

My two cents worth:
I have bought less than 10cd's in my life, so its not like I'm downloading as a substitute for buying cd's. I don't actually own a dedicated CD player. But I do have an Mp3 player, which is a better format as it holds 4 hours/256mb and has no moving parts (Pendrive Plus £80)...perfect for the gym and cyling.
If I like a band, I spend money on posters, concert tickets, the odd t-shirt and guitar music books. The concept of CD ownership would only appeal to me if I had a jukebox to access them all easily (maybe one day!)
However, KazaA lite isn't that great for me now. I used to fill my PC up with all sorts of crap on dowload using file-sharing apps. Now the pop-ups / spyware / viruses are too much of a pain in the ass to bother with. If I really had to have a track, I would borrow a CD and rip-it. I'd rather keep my PC clean for proper stuff (i.e. midi sequencing!):p

I use kazaa lite loads, its way better then kazaa and much faster. I do see the illiegal aspect of it, but I am a teenager living off £45 a month and after my usual expenatures, i simpley have no money left for CDs

I would hardly compare the sound quality of even the best MP3's to that of a cd/vinyl/dvd copy...
It really scares me that SO many people are listening to so much crappy audio... Do yourselves a favor - the 25%'ers who don't buy cd's anymore...
But one cd - that's not a HUGE investment - go to a good stereo (with a mp3 cd to reference against!).... CRANK IT UP!!!!!

I tend to download tracks by new artists and if I like them I'll buy the CD - Rather than waste money up front for something you don't like.
Could be a revenue generator for all artists if they do as David Gray did with his last album - he had a new track available to hear each day on his website when they launched the album. On the strength of this I bought another of his albums.

File sharing is where you connect to another users hard drive (only certain folders are accessable) and tkae the files off them directly rather than through a web server. KaZaA is an example of one of these

Yeah i download music all the time. I dont care if those people r cryin and say that we r stealin their music. These artists have way more money that ill probably neva have. How u gonna cry about people stealin music when u already got 30 million dollars. Actually Wrong. Kazaa isnt Illegal. File Sharing is legal. Putting CD Music is probably illegal but no one can do anything about it.
If anyone answered no to the poll, why dont u go complain to the FBI or something?
In the past i used Audiogalaxy, but right now i“m using kazza and it realy sucks a lot of loops of songs, low quality of sound, low speed, and i can“t find a lot of tracks that i want. I prefer to buy records from bands that i realy like.

if record companies charged the minimum amount instead of heap the price up to line their pockets people wouldn't download the music paying £13 for a cd that costs under a pound to make is silly and singles are worse £3 for one or two songs rip off

Hold on here Lord Midi may have a point but I dont think its not that black and white, The internet is a great tool for everything you need to know and do but face the facts here Music downloading is one off its biggest assets! Music must be the most searched thing on the net other than Porn and because its there and its free andbecause somebody pertakes in it does'nt mean they are Thieves!
Plus if peeps want to listen to a song before they buy go a web site that gives you a preview off the top 40 etc.
The music industry has been ripping us off for years, so its about time we all got a bit back. I have over 4000 cd albums and they were all bought and paid for so I think I have given enough to the music industry considering each cd cost about £12 each

OK...I'm going to make a few people mad with this....
Listen, I download music every few days. If there's a song on the radio that I really like, I'll get it. Usually big pop singles, but sometimes stuff that's a little more abscure. So by no means can I say that I'm in the clear. But I'll go out and by 3 or 4 cd's every week, just because I respect the artists enough to pay money for it. I don't give a rat's arse about record companies, I care about the real people who have sacrificed to create art. Maybe you should think about there people, growing up, realising that all they wanted to do was make music. Do you wake up every day of your life with a burning need to create? Obviously not, because the only thing you seem to be able to do is take away from them what's theirs.

I am a music producer myself, ands so dont really support those who download only.
I do however download lots of tracks myself. I usually download remixes of new tunes and "mash-up's" that are not commercially available.
I think p2p networks are great for people trying to get there tracks heard and for downloading hard to find tunes.
I recently downloaded a few albums that i had lost and damaged when i moved. I couldnt quite bring myself to go pay for them again

Eight years ago you could buy a new release cd in the states for $12.50 where here in Oz you paying $29.00, Of course people are going to look for a cheaper alternative. I do about 50/50.

Buying is the only way to go, support your artists!
saxmidiman
12-25-2003, 11:46 PM
Let's get a few things straight. The artists that create all this wonderful music are really only get a small portion of their CD sales. Most of the money goes to publishers and such. Don't get me wrong, the artist will get good money for the CD sales, but let's don't forget about the mass machine behind the artists.
I once talked to the guys in the Powder Blues Band recently, and they said it doesn't really bother them that people are downloading their music. Tom Lavin said right over the mike to go ahead and do it. It keeps his name and music being played. I guess it's a matter of perspective.
Support the artist by going to their concerts and buying their merchandise. It's just as good as buying their CD.
If the music industry thought about it, they should just put a small fee towards the file sharing community similiar to the one they charge TV video channels or radio stations. File sharing and such is just a fast telecommunications source. It's much easier and less hastle.
As for midifiles, they shouldn't be shared as well. There is copywrite laws for that as well. I think the bigwigs at most music companies don't feel this media source doesn't cut into their pocket books as much as the mp3 market.

Though downlaoding music I've found a lot of artists I wouldn't have heard of if I haven't. I would have never had intrest in Japanese artists like utada hikaru (I have all her albums now) and Ayumi Hamasaki if I couldn't. Most other songs I downlaod and don't by albums for is simply because I only like one song by them, and there would be no point in me buying their album.

$20 for a cd is on the steep side but when you crave import cds, for example Japanese pop, Korean pop etc., you'll be paying upwards of $35 for just a cd. I'm all for supporting the artist but when cds get way over priced few people are going to buy it. Teenagers and young adults are the major consumers in most countries, if the music industry caters to this age group, ie lowering prices bc young people seldom have large amounts of $$$, then the music industry will profit from it. What hurts the industry more is copy protected cds, when you buy a cd you expect to make a copy of it incase of theft or damage, heck I just scratched a enw $40 cd and I couldn't even make a back up of it and I'm not willing to fork over for another cd, it's just not worth it. If I scratch the copied version, I'll just make another one. Until us consumers get 100% unscratchable cds, and lower prices, many people are still going to download music.

01-12-2004, 04:09 PM
I got to admit I've downloaded a lot of mp3s, but then again, I still buy lots of CDs. Someone said in an earlier post that artists are loaded and don't really need the money, this may be true for some but not all and anyways the artists don't make squat from CDs the real money is in touring. If piracy can help a band sell tickets that could actually be good for them. Unfortunately the record companies don't see it that way. If a band stops selling X amount of CDs they get cut off the label so they can't release anything new. So that's what I'm trying to do, buy CDs from the bands I like so tthey can make new ones and just download the songs I'd only like to hear once in a while...

Whatever gets you through the oncoming court battle.
Distributing a copywrited sound or video in full or in part without written permission from the legal owners of that sound or video is considered illegal. While mp3's are not illegal in and of themselves, transmitting them willingly without some sort of permission is illegal and can be acted upon.
Here's my thing. Charge the companies a small fee for their file sharing software (OR BUY IT FROM THEM). The same charge would be similiar to the charge to Muchmusic in Canada, or MTV in the US. These guys pay money to play these videos. The benefactors (us) of this software would then have to pay a fee to have this software. This is what should be done but it's really hard to do. First there was Napster, then Morpheus, and lately it's been Kazaa. For every one that's been nabbed and made into a acceptable distribution source, two more pop up and replace it.

I've used probably every single decent filesharing program out there (Started back when early gnu versions were released), and while the enhanced version of Kazaa has the most features, I'd have to say my personal favorite is WinMX. THere can be long lines at times(You can always talk to the person about bumping), but it's been the most solid program. You can not only find just about anything you can think of(gbusters.mid? :P), but also successfully complete the download more than any other program.
There is a new program which I downloaded a little while ago, but it's about as easy to config as sysreset, so I'd rather stick with the extrmely user-friendly format of MX =)

Filesharing seems to be a necessary evil at the moment, i mean, there is no way to stop it, and often the music that people want can be rare or hard to find. plus people in some countries don't have access to releases from others, or if they do, import costs are extortionate. plus we all know that the record companies can make a cd for very little money, so how can they justify charging so much money for an album. i know the artists have to make a living. perhaps if artists offered samples to listen to on their sites, and the music companies offered sampler cds at a cheaper rate (a bit like the free cds we sometimes get in the uk when we buy an album) plus cheaper albums, then it might encourage cd buying.

oh i forgot to add how extortionate singles are in the uk, you pay almost half as much as an album costs and only get about 3 or 4 tracks, of which some of them are often the same, just remixes.
capitalism sucks.

For me, it's not that I'm scared of the police crashing down my door, it's that the sharing program I keep stupidly downloading - Kazaa - takes up too much space. If I can't find what I'm looking for there, then I'm stuck with paying for it or grabbing the MIDI, which I need to do in my current situation.

I use file share on an almost regular basis but you still have to buy cd's if you want to keep getting new music.(keep the music coming) advertising crap, I know but it makes sense.
After all X-Factor the artist isn't the only one responsible for bringing you the tunes you love.......

i think id rather download mp3's etc because the option is there, and i only buy cd's when i cannot find the rare tracks what are on albums

nothing as good as having a good cd in your hands and browse a good looking booklet

btw: if musicians invested more into a good looking cd and/or booklet, more people would buy it.

I think I've downloaded everything. Since getting broadband I find myself having downloaded so much with nothing more to download. I thank KazaA but I understand kazaa may not be around forever cos all the chickens will get rid of it in case they get caught so the network will probably die out - I hope this isn't the case but there'll always be others I spose.

Kazaa is the best. Napster didn't really make that big an impact when it returned. At my university we have our own P2P networking software called LUSer NET which is better than anything. We get speeds of around 1Mb/sec.
