Computer hacking is the act of exploiting a system's vulnerabilities.
Hacking is a good thing. Yes, it is illegal only because sometimes major stuff happens when vulnerabilities are exposed.
How does it become illegal or how does it become in general?
Hacking beneficial in the long run. If the security hole wasn't exploited in the first place, someone that really wanted to do some damage could have. (assuming the fix the exploit so it can not be done again) Hackers will not destory data. They always leave a way to get things back to normal.
A true hacker doesn't just seek out individules and pick on them. They have bigger concerns. It's the petty ones sitting around their computer with their cock in their hands that create the bad image for the ones that know what they're doing.
A big company could protect themselves by hiring a guy that knows what they're doing with security. If an individule is really worried about it, then buy a firewall.
They learn information from various sources. Knowing programming languages and systems is usually a good start. If you don't know how something is built, you can't take it apart, right? For that matter, you can't find it's weakness if you don't know how it works. Same thing for a computer system.
Hope you can translate some of this into a paper format.. hehe

Hacking is two things.. one, making something work in a way not originally expected.. two.. gaining access to systems in unintended ways.
Hacking in the former sense is good.. it's behind a lot of the cool software out there. In the latter sense.. well, depends on who uses it for what. It can be bad and illegal.
You can get basic protection from hacking with things like firewalls, not running servers and software you don't need to, keeping your software updated..
For real protection, a company needs to employ someone who knows security. Knowing security means knowing how security is breeched. Hacking (in the breakin' sense) isn't just a skill 'bad' people have, it's a skill people who defend against those types have too.
