Yup, the old
9700
9500PRO
will do you nicely if you can get hold of either on the cheap.
If memory serves, they both have a good clock speed, but the 9700 has twice as many pixel pipelines, so it pushes about 10 gb per sec peak bandwith as opposed to 7ish on the 9500pro.
Generally the memory bandwith is the thing that limits graphics cards. Although next gen games require fat amounts of RAM to load the flashy textures up. You might want to check if you can be arsed! There are round-up comparisons at tomshardware.com
But I think either of these perform better than a T14200, at least in your current classics like UT2002.
I used to know all the differences between them, not any more! I am too busy playing music! :)

Well it depends on what card your gonna get. ATI didn't take the performance lead over the geforce 4 until the R300 chip. So unless your going to get a 9500 or higher then I would go with the geforce 4. If your going to get a 9600 xt or 9600 pro then I would suggest maybe getting a 5700 ultra. That board flat out beats the 9600 series. It might only be hurt if you were to compair then in dx 9 with a PS 2.0. Just about no games right now use the full potential of PS 2.0 so it wouldn't really matter.

I disagree. While the early drivers for the 8500 series (Has a new name now) gave the edge to nVidia's superior driver prowess, later driver closed the gap between the two and in some cases had the 8500 beating the GeForce 4 but usually not by a noticable amount.
So to answer the original post, if you are going with the modern cards the choice is ATI all the way. If you are going with last gen cards it's a toss up. If your looking for a card on the cheap, Radeon 9500/9600's (Pro or Non) are good cards that are relativly cheap.

i'm a nvidia ... everyone has their opinions. if your trying to decide for yourself .. YOU should decide what you want. each have their up's and down's. see what you plan to run on ur computer and decide through that :)

ATI is King!
ATI has slowly been taking over the market in the last 18 months. Ever since the launch of the 9700, Nvidia has been playing catchup. With the announcement from Microsoft that the next Xbox console would be using ATI graphics instead, I knew that Nvidia was slipping. This is not only because of better drivers, but definitely from having better picture quality.
HEy, i can't help but to luv em.... they're canadian!!!
