I started working on this medley a while ago... just after getting the PotC-soundtrack.
I already posted a version of this file in the "Requests"-forum about a month ago, since there was a request for PotC-music. Unfortunately the topic got locked (because the request was fulfilled), and so I wasn't able to post newer versions of the file as I was exending it.
Right now it's almost 7 minutes long, and still unfinished. Tell me what you think!

From Monsterdictionary.com:
Medley

(a.) Mingled; confused.
(n.) A mixture; a mingled and confused mass of ingredients, usually inharmonious; a jumble; a hodgepodge; -- often used contemptuously.
(n.) The confusion of a hand to hand battle; a brisk, hand to hand engagement; a melee.
(n.) A composition of passages detached from several different compositions; a potpourri.
(n.) A cloth of mixed colors.

What part of the movie was that played in?
CaptainSolo
12-05-2003, 11:09 AM
@xkrazytx :
Since it's a MEDLEY, as mentioned in the post BEFORE yours, the whole thing consists of different parts from the soundtrack, that were played in different parts of the movie... I am too lazy to pick'em all out now...
CaptainSolo
12-06-2003, 06:29 PM
All right, I continued working on it... and now it's around 9:30 long... and STILL unfinished. Though there are only about 2 minutes left at the and, I will probably add something inbetween as well... but right now it just got longer at the end.

Well, thanks everybody... and to make your day (and angry for wasting your credits on the last version) I've just finished my new version... which is basically complete, running 11:30.
As I said, I am planning on adding one or 2 minutes in the middle, since I don't have that much evil Barbossa-music in the medley. But for now, it's a wrap.
Enjoy! (and keep the comments AND criticism coming)

just listened to whole thing very nice
could you come up with just a piano part?
CaptainSolo
12-15-2003, 11:49 AM
I was thinking about a piano part myself...
Unfortunately, I am no musician. And I don't play piano at all... so, since I am a huge soundtrack fan it's alittle easier for me to COPY something I hear to MIDI. But there's no solo-piano part in the whole PotC-soundtrack, and I am not able to compose something like that... at least nothing that sounds great. But if anybody is willing to play some of the themes (especially the "love"-theme in the end of my medley, before the revision of the "action"-theme) in solo-piano versions, I would be very happy to include them in my medley (giving full credit, of course).

#1, this new credit system is RETARDED AS HE||! I have a popup blocker and wasted about $100 getting it corrected. Then, with my last $25, it opened and my WMA said "Attachment Error!" wtf?

I've been wanting to listen to some of your other self sequenced compilations but like I said, this $ system sucks dick. fatwallet.com has no such system and yes, they have leechers but if you have really good content, people will post, get you more good content, up your traffic, so you can sell more ad impressions.
funkmasterta
12-15-2003, 05:44 PM
Personally, i think midibuddy is selling themselves short. They have THE BEST midi's on the web and with almost every cell phone out there enable to play polyphonic ringtones, they're shooting themselves in the foot by being toooo cautious about leechers. A great example of this is Microsoft, they let everyone use FAT file system for free for the longest time, to get everyone hooked and now they're starting to charge for it, $0.25 per unit sale, cost to mfg's but eventually passed on to good 'ol us.

12-15-2003, 05:51 PM
oh yea, I forgot to mention that it's incredibly that you can do all this by ear??!
btw, you do it on a keyboard? I'm pretty new to this but I'm starting to get more into it. I currently use a POS Yamaha from bestbuy, not that Y's are POS, just the model I have. My friend just bought a Korg Triton Studio and it's freakin awesome! It was 2k though. Any other good brands/models out there?
CaptainSolo
12-16-2003, 01:49 AM
No, I don't use a keyboard (except for my PC-keyboard of course *g*). But for sequencing I just use a mouse. And except for some guitar, I don't play an instrument at all...
And, you can DIRECT DOWNLOAD THE FILE HERE (http://www.scummbar.com/community/fanmusic/files/PotC121203115800.mid)...

Captain, I just listened to your latest version. Wow! I love how you finished off the end. Now I'm wishing I had a better keyboard.
I'm curious as to how you did all this? You said you're not a musician so I'm guessing that just means you don't read music well? You did this by ear? That's unbelievable! I can do things by ear, but not that well. I can't imangine trying to do all that without a keyboard and a computer keyboard and mouse. What program did you use?
funkmasterta
12-22-2003, 01:35 AM
CaptainSolo, did you ever or plan to do a Lord of the Rings theme song?
I found one on the web: www.myt610.com
but the quality is very so-so. Nothing compared to what you've done w/Pirates.
CaptainSolo
12-22-2003, 02:47 PM
Well, thanks again for all the praise... and concerning that "sequencing by ear"-issue... well, it's hard to describe, but I'll try:
You're right, I can't read music... I mean, like most people I had some musical education at school, but for me it would take forever to figure out a melody by just looking at notation. And because of this it wouldn't really help if I had sheet music (ok, maybe it would help in difficult passages, but it would take much longer). For me it is easier to listen to the music over and over again, and then I'll just start with the base melody and try to nail it as close as possible to the original. Then I listen to it again, and usually I hear more "details" in the music, which I add to the sequence. I repeat this step many times, until it sounds somehow like the original. When it comes to chords, it's more or less trial and error. I'll add the base note, and try to add the other two notes by just trying around, until I hit the right chord. It sound like it could take forever (sometimes it does), but in most cases I get it right pretty fast (after all there are only 12 different notes). Well, and after all that it just builds... (by the way, I am using the "MIDI Orchestrator Plus" from Voyetra). Of course, there are passages where you can't really figure out every single instrument, and in those cases I simply guess. And I try different things, until it SOUNDS like the real thing... it doesn't have to be right, it should just sound like it would be.
In the case of my Pirates-medley (which is the biggest thing I've done in MIDI), I had the advantage of the composer's style. It was done in typical Hans Zimmer style (of course it was composed by Klaus Badelt, but as a "disciple" of Zimmer, his style was strongly influenced by him... and after all Zimmer "overproduced" the score - as mentioned on the CD - which kinda sounds negative, like Zimmer "proof read" it). Anyway, Zimmer has a very pop-oriented style, which means very homogene rhythms, and not so many changes in speed. This made it a little easier for me.
And this leads to the idea of doing "Lord of the Rings". Well, I would LOVE to do it... again in medley-form (maybe three 12 minute medleys... one for each film). Shore did an awesome job on it. But I am not sure if I can do it (it's NOT pop-oriented). I think I'll try, but it'll take much time... much longer than the Pirates-medley.

wow...good post! Thanks for detailing the steps you go thru, much appreciated since it's not uncommon that ppl are unwilling to share good secrets.
try out that t610 link above, it might help you w/the base melody.
I'm sure I speak for everyone as we can't wait to hear what your rendition would sound like.

If you'd bothered to read the whole thread, you would have noticed that CaptainSolo posted a link to the file that doesn't require $MB to download. And if you're having trouble finding ways to earn $MB, try reading slickvic's thread, How to make $2100 MB per week (http://board.midibuddy.net/t81685.html).
And, chaos, you've already thanked the good Captain once in this thread. No need to repeat yourself. Of course, it might be more appropriate if you wait until you've actually heard the file to thank him... :rolleyes2
Dear Captain Solo,
First I'd like to congratulate you with your great work. The medly sounds fantastic.
But, I'd like to ask you for a favor:
In the song is a piece that is a bit more up-tempo. The song is called Jack Sparrow, I think.
Could you take that bit out of the medly and make a new (short) midi file out of it?
If you could do that for me, I'd be very grateful. Could you maybe mail it to me as well?
Thanks in advance!!
ps: I'm sorry if my english isn't that good, but I'm from the Netherlands, so English isn't my native language.
