Is there any way to store vocals in a midi file?

No - midi is only a sequence of instructions to control a sound generator of one sort or another.

More strictly, Cakewalk is a midi sequencing application - you have to do the creation :).
The later versions also have audio capability, thus enbling you to record and mix both midi and audio files together within the same environment.

...But you can not save the composition as a MIDI file.

You can save it (publish it) as an mp3 file rather than the default wav which is ridiculously large.
