any thoughts on the best digital mixers and midi equipment to use to play back Midi files in a studio environment?
cakewalk? cubase? Nuendo? which is better?

I use Cakewalk on both my laptop(live) and my desktop(at home)...That's just the software I moved to after retiring my Roland Mc500...I'm happy with Cakewalk...I run an Alesis D4 and an Alesis nanosynth(as well as various rack modules that are even older-hahaha) with the desktop, and I run a Proteus 2000 and A D4 with the laptop live...I like outboard synths as opposed to soundcards...that's just me-I'm getting old so I don't like to use stuff that's going to take ages to figure out...

I'm not sure I understand the question. I'm not even sure if you understand it either.

The quality of your playback sounds are entirely dependent on the hardware (or software) sound generation system used. It has absolutely nothing to do with the sequencer itself. On that basis, it doesn't matter which sequencer you use, as long as it is one you know and understand.

As far as the mixer question goes, if you are in a studio, presumably it will be equipped with a mixer of its own :) . So, why not use theirs?
