www.anvilstudio.com. this program is free and it allows you to create and edit midi files. You can also edit audio using the audio lab. There are many features in it.

But there are also some extra features that are not free but they were not necessary to me.

Anybody ever heard of this software? Evaluate it. I wouldn't mind criticism.

I tried it but didn't really like it. I need something that I can change the key in a midi easily but it's all subjective, we like what we use most and that's usually the first programme we get. I have Cubase SX yet I still edit my midis with Jazz32 free from jazzware.com

How good is this cakewalk program anyways?

I've seen so many diff versions on www.softseek.com but don't know which one to try out.

SONAR contains the some of the bones of the Cakewalk Home Studio or Pro Audio series (and adds a few new ones of its own), but it has been fleshed out in an entirely different way to that series.

The functionality remains largely the same as Home Studio/Pro Audio for MIDI files (i.e. if you are just making MIDI files, you can easily get by using SONAR as if you were using Cakewalk), but audio and synth handling have taken a bit of an overhaul.

However, since MIDI files are the main focus of this place, the audio functionality wouldn't really matter much to you, unless you were looking to do more than just MIDI with SONAR. However, if you were doing just MIDI files, then it really doesn't matter what Cakewalk/SONAR series software you go for, as they all basically do the same thing as each other.

But then again, seeing that SONAR contains everything Pro Audio did and more, then I'd say that SONAR is the one to check out. And now that SONAR 2 has come out, it just keeps getting better and better.

For a cheaper solution, go with Cakewalk/SONAR/SONAR 2. (Basically anything from Cakewalk Pro Audio 5 onwards will do fine, for your purposes.)

However, if you want professional-looking scores and stuff like that, then you'll have to spend quite a bit more money to get Sibelius or Sibelius 2. It is very much worth the money though, for the brilliant results you can produce.

I agree with the Sonar 2 option, midi and audio are easy to edit and the software is kicking:thumbsup:

I just installed Sonar last week. I have a bit of "option anxiety" There is SO much you can do with this program!

True. But once you get used to the stuff you can do, it all becomes ridiculously easy and fast thanks to the brilliant and easy-to-use interface.

I use cakewalk Sonar and love it. I tried the anvil software and still prefer sonar. I also have used Cubas and Audio Platinum, with mixed feelings. Anyone ever use Reason?

I use Noteworthy Composer [http://www.noteworthycomposer.com], and for what I need to do, it's actually pretty good. Plus, I think it's only about $20. I also like Finale, but that's more for writing music.
