I can’t believe it. I finally managed to sequence a song on a sequencer I mean I first taught myself how to sequence midi files in February and it has taken that long to actually work out how to make something that sounds like the real song. But I’m pleased with the outcome. I just had to tell someone how happy I felt I decided to sequence the song “great southern land” by the Australian group Icehouse because I found the song no too difficult to make and because I like the song and because I wasn’t able to find other midi versions of the song on most websites. I just want to know what anyone thinks about my first midi file (of course you must have heard the song I hope) and note that it is also a work in progress i.e if I find a way to improve it

congrats! that sounds fantastic. You have a great ear. If thats your first midi, Im stickin around for the rest. That is truly an excellent job.
There are 3 parts where the drums are doubled - measures 85-87 and measure 101 and 147. Are they supposed to be there?

I don't think so thank you for pointing that out and by the way thank you for the complement. I wasn't so sure that it sounded that good

I don't know the original song, but that's a very nice sequence! Especially for a first effort.
I think VoG's right, you've got good ears. ;)
I noticed a few duplicate notes as well. Depending on the sound module it really shouldn't matter much. Your sequencer may not let you record a key signature, but I like seeing the music in a staff view, so I usually include that.
You haven't used many MIDI controllers. They can help add realness to the sound of a file. Pitch bends can be used to good effect as well, though there wasn't much call for them in this tune other than perhaps the vocal line.
Nice file, mate!

Icehouse were a popular Aussie band in the 80's /90's(I think), kinda like INXS(if youve heard of them)
From what I can gather this song is basically about the piece of land called Australia
Icehouse - Great Southern Land
Standing at the limit of an endless ocean
stranded like a runaway, lost at sea
city on a rainy day down in the harbour
watching as the grey clouds shadow the bay
looking everywhere 'cause I had to find you
this is not the way that i remember it here
anyone will tell you its a prisoner island
hidden in the summer for a million years
Great Southern Land, burned you black
so you look into the land and it will tell you a story
story 'bout a journey ended long ago
if you listen to the motion of the wind in the mountains
maybe you can hear them talking like I do
". . they're gonna betray, they're gonna forget you
are you gonna let them take you over this way . ."
Great Southern Land, Great Southern Land
you walk alone like a primitive man
and they make it work with sticks and bones
see their hungry eyes, its a hungry home
I hear the sound of the stranger's voices
I see their hungry eyes, their hungry eyes
Great Southern Land, Great Southern Land
they burned you black, black against the ground
Great Southern Land, in the sleeping sun
you walk alone with the ghost of time
they burned you black, black against the ground
and they make it work with rocks and sand
I hear the sound of the stanger's voices
I see their hungry eyes, their hungry eyes
Great Southern Land, Great Southern Land
you walk alone, like a primitive man
you walk alone with the ghost of time
and they burned you black
yeah, they burned you black
Great Southern Land

thank you all for your lovely comments .Hey I guess I should have added the lyrics using Karacan or win karaoke creator because the song had lyrics. yeah the band was quite popular in australia and I have got a brief biography for anyone new to the band below
though the band had vaying member the band was essentially a vehicle for the australian iva davies. they originally called themselves the flowers and hit the us chart in 81 with we can get it together but didn't score another hit till 88 with "crazy" and then to song "electric blue" the song was featured in the film young einstien starring yahoo serious

There are several topics addressing that question in the General Sequencing (http://board.midibuddy.net/forumdisplay.php?s=&forumid=44) and Sequencing Software (http://board.midibuddy.net/forumdisplay.php?s=&forumid=41) Forums.

Iva Davies and Icehouse reformed in 2004 (this year) releasing a new song called 'Heroes' - which is the official Australian Olympic Team Song. Not as good as his older stuff in my opinion......!

Sorry but just for the record, Heroes is a Davd Bowie song that Icehouse covered for the Olympics. Also Iva Davies has listed many times that David Bowie has been his inspiration in singing and songwritting, I guess he took it as a great honour to cover one of his idols song.
