How would I go about burning a mid file onto a compact disc so that it can be played on a conventional stereo player? Are there any FREE programs that can do this for me? I really need this because I NEED the midi file to be used as a backing track for a performance and I need to record a mid composition

Put simply, you play the midi file and record the audio output, of whatever sound generator you are using, as a 16 bit, 44.1 KHz, 2 channel .wav file. Then you use a CDR writing application to write that file as an Audio CD.

On the assumption you already have the sound generation bit running (as you are using midi, that's a fair assumption) then you only need the CD writing software - and there are plenty of freeware apps for that around.

I think there is a program out there (audio hijack i think) that will capture any sound from your pc and turn it into a wav file. Which you can burn to a CD.

finale 2004 lets you save files as .wav.. but yes, using your computer's output from playing the song works great (and a lot cheaper, lol)
