umm guys, i wanna convert an avi file i dl from bit torrent to vcd format. i previously used nero since it has the built-in feature of converting avi to vcd format but whenever i use nero, it seems that it "performs an illegal operation" as what windows says when it starts encoding the video. so is there any alternative cd writing software that can convert and burn avi to vcd. by the way my nero is version 6.0.0.9 if i remember correctly, also the avi im converting seems to be a dvd rip file, encoded in ac3 audio format.

Might be out to lunch, but check out TEMPENC. I think that's what it's called. It supposed to do just that.

you might wanna try updating your codecs, and/or try using TMPGEnc 3.0 XPress.

Actually I wasn't even aware that this was possible. Thank you for pointing that out to me. ;)

Everything I've learned about digital video (which I'll admit isn't a whole lot) is from http://www.videohelp.com/. It's a nice site and might answer questions like this more expertly than some other sources.

Goto www.videohelp.com it's the best place for step by step instructions for converting stuff and it tells you all the programs you need.

tmpeg should do what you need.
also, i'm sure you already know this.. but decoding from an mp4 format (divx, xvid, etc..) and encoding to mpg/mpg2 results in a huge loss in video quality. you're going from 1 lossy algorithm to another.. different information gets removed.
