royalties have to be paid to artist's even if you stream you might get away with it but i wouldn't like to risk getting into a legal battle.

thats true.. take www.digitallyimported.com for example
Technically, the copywrite holder can request that you remove it, I think.

no i dont actually think it is aye!! Lucky tho
I think it depends which country you live in... russia for example has really loose copyright stuff and so you can do whatever without being prosecuted, but i dunno about many other countries/

Copyright law extends worldwide. I don't know about Russian law, but if you have a Russian site, liability would extend to the country where the infringement occured.

Yeah, sure, copyright sucks, but look at the case from the others POV. Would you like someone to use your stuff and not paying for it, when you are supposed to get money for it..?
I know I'd go into an insane killing spree, slaughtering everyone who got in my way.
Also, you might not get caught. The net is big, and they will have problems catching everyone. ;)

Hi everyone,
If you have music (wether it is audio or midi, it makes no difference) on your website for downloading, you'll need a mechanical lisence. In this case you pay royalties for every single copy you make (= for every download).
If you only make the music available to listen to (possible with a flash player, but as far as I know only for audio, not midi), you need a performance lisence. You pay a certain amount every year.
It's obvious that if you use other people's work, you pay them for their work.
Kind regards,
Alain Besseleer

write something like "send me an e-mail if some of the files are illegal and ill remove them"

it depends on how many files you have on your website and if its really popular i doubt the riaa would prosecute you if you have one song
its illegal despite the likleyhood of getting sued ;)

I have the same problem. I don't know if it's legal or not. But on my site, I credited the person who posted the MIDI I wanted to use on my site. I guess it all depends on what the user who provides the MIDI wants.
I think it's allright if you only can hear midis here in Germany. But i don't how it's in other countries...

I think what Alain Beeseler Aka midiprog2000 is absolutly on the money! All work should be accreditted. Rermember it is not just the record company but the ARTIST who retains the royalties. Albeit P2p is great for emerging artists to get their music out there. Whether or not all these law suits nailing kids for copyright infringment is cool. wel that is another kettle of fish altogether. I think that file sharing is just that. I f I lend you a book to read that I paid for what is the hassle. It is when I charge you to read it that some of that should be given to the artist. Well that is my opinion anyway.

Here's some very helpful information...
If you put information of any type in the Internet, it can be saved, no matter what kinds of precausions you take.
Also streaming music can be saved to local hard disk.

That's true... and legal or not... anyone can be sued.
So at least protect yourself as much as possible within the law.

do you have rights to the music atleast?
the chances of being sued should be low since u are not making profit from it. In fact you are helping them to promote their songs:)

Yeah, you'd think that they would be greatful. ;)
I think would be best to just get permission from the authors first, that way you'll avoid any legal issues.
