Lightbulb win mx - a fantasti search tool

the artisan was talking about starting a "secret" group of midi enthusiasts.

well, have any of you heard of a piece of software called win mx?

no??

basically it is a search engine that searches anyones computers for pictures, movies, midi, wavs or mp3's

you download the software. Once installed it then asks you to specify your modem speed, the folder which you want youn downloads to go to, your shared folders that have your midis, mp3 et al.

then as you search peoples shared filders, they can search yours, much the same way napster worked.

this may be an alternative to arduous task of setting up servers tcp/ip protocols and all the other crap.

you can find the software by searching for winmx in a search engine like lycos or yahoo.

hopwever people can only get stuff from you when you are logged in.

just a thought....

I am ( and have been) a big advocate of file sharing and P2P for a long time.

this group isn't that secret.....hey we are talking about it in the open.

Win MX has it's failings but is good in general...i pretty much use all of them...we just wanted somthing MIDI specific.

Dave

no harm in that....ideas are what makes the world go round...
along with money.......
gravitational pull of the moon and sun....
the earths own gravity

and few other factors that I am sure I have missed

Dave

{actually......does the sun have a gavitational pull...or does it just suck :-) }

Gotta agree with Dave on this -
Sure it isn't that secret, but it is very controlled.
The hub's location is not well known, plus it is by invite only - ya don't have a member account there, you're not getting in.

Doing it all this way could give more insurance against getting closed down or harrassed, but more importantly, it will be MIDI specific (as Dave pointed out), meaning that you're generally not going to have to sort through 9 million non-midi search results to find what your looking for. It's aaaaaall about da MIDI.
Depending on how things go, there might be related hubs added for mp3 or audio ware - whatever. This is a test run right now, though.

WinMX is a nice p2p application, though - I use it personally on occasion - thanks for bringing it up. Ideas do make the world go around, and that's how this hub thing got going in the first place. Just people talking about ideas.

IF there are good midis owned by WinMX users - grab em' and bring em here

I never found good midi's on WinMX but it's great for MP3 as far as I'm concerned
