Default Guitar Center Rant...(again)

Well they just opened a GC here in Richmond.
Now I am starting to see what everyone is talking about....

1. Asked for a 6x13 snare case. The guys starts digging around in what is
obviously larger tom cases.
2. Friend of mine bought a DW 9000. The guys spent 15 minutes ringing it up
and talking about the extended warranty for $20. First of all, I would never
buy a warranty for a pedal. If it doesnt break in the first few weeks then I
think its going to last a few years at least.
3. Asked for a set of Baritone guitar strings. You would have thought that I
just landed from Mars. The guy was clueless. Dont they hire any musicians???

And Sam Ash insnt much better....

What a scam. All you'd have to do is email JVN and you'd have parts
on the way.

In my area North of Philly in PA I find GC is much better than Sam Ash, price
wise especially and service wise too. They don't always have what I need or
want but nodoby else does either.
You need to educate most service staffs. I find if you go in, talk to the
cats, play a little bit, judge the drum off and stuff like that you get better
prices and better service. ; - )

My favorite extended warranty pitch usually comes from Best Buy employees.

BB Employee: "You really should get the extended warranty. We have a LOT of
problems with these and a LOT of them come back!"

Me: "Really? What a piece of ****. Forget the extended warranty. I'm not
buying the product at all if it's garbage. Do you have something similar
that is better made?"

With all due respect, Dave, I disagree. We are the customers, they are the
sales clerks. Without our patronage, they would not be there. IMHO it's up
to them to make us want to use their store. It's not up to us to treat them
nice and know more about the product to help them sell it to us. My job as
a customer is to purchase the product, not educate the sales clerk on what
they're selling or how to sell it--that's management's job.

I've worked in customer service before, for years, and even people who don't
work in CS know what Rule # 1 is: The Customer Is Always Right.

There's a thread of elitism, snobbery, ignorance, and greed that runs
rampant through these music stores, not unlike what music publishing was
like for decades. Fortunately, today we have choices. The only reason I go
to a store these days is if I need something right away. Otherwise, I go to
the manufacturer or do mail-order. Why should I use a store where the sales
clerks are not only rude but ignorant as well?

Yeah, they actually tried to sell me one on a floor model Maytag stove I
bought last year. The Maytag factory warranty was better than the F-ing
Best Buy warranty! If I hadn't have looked at it before I checked out I'd
have been out $50. I was quite pissed and really gave the store manager a
piece of my mind and he ended up giving me a $50 gift card. I do buy one
whenever I get a TV though. After my Sharp 27 got hit by lightning twice in
the first 2 years I had it, the $50 was well worth it.

Funny, John. I got the same line of BS when I bought my 2002 Honda
Civic. The salesman said "I'd strongly advise you to get the extended
warranty. Problems do occur. Our service department isn't just there to do
oil changes." I said "This is my 3rd new Honda and I haven't used the
warranty service yet. I'll take my chances."

I may be wrong, but with some chains when the salesguy gives a discount it
knocks down their commission.

It's worked well for me with computers in the past, too. My 600mHz off-brand
floor model died and the only computer they had in stock with a DVD writer
(this was a couple of years ago) was a brand new in the box HP 1 gHz
Pavilion. It took three trips (and getting the right blue-shirt) but out the
door I went with my new computer.

LOL! Just about the same thing happened to me a year ago when my
"E-machines" (insert laughter) died. They couldn't find a replacement to
match, so I got totally upgraded for free. They get just about all of my
electronics business. I especially love getting the floor model stuff. You
can get super deals.

A heavy-duty circuit breaker power strip is cheaper and lasts longer...did
you know homeowners' insurance doesn't cover damage to appliances due to
lightning strikes?

Anytime I'm on a gig and have to plug an amp or mixer into something, I use
my power strip. A heavy duty one, not just any old strip.

Exactly. Volume of business and customer credibility beats max profit on
single deals any day. This is how the best travel agents operate--they dig
into their commission to get better savings for the customer. Works almost
every time.

Depends on your policy. Mine does.
Most people don't find out what their policy covers or doesn't cover until
they file a claim. Anything not covered can usually be added on with a
rider. I have riders to raise the $$ limits for my music gear & PC's.

Oh I agree, but most of these people are way too short sighted to think that
way. Probably because they'll either quit or get fired within a week.

Murphy's law applies here. I always buy an extended warranty on all the
cars I buy. I usually buy a year or 2 old and one repair will usually eat
up the cost of the warranty. It's like an insurance policy. I've been
burned before so I always get it on autos.

Cars last ten years with doing nothing but changing oil. There is less need
then there ever was do have these policys. Many of you are probably not old
enough to remeber that belts lasted 10,000 miles, and radiators about 25,000.
Engines rarley made it past 80,000 without smoking up a storm. Tires and
brakes were good for about 20,000 , and that was if you were lucky. How come
they didn't have inusrance back then?
If you need on a insurance on a 2 year old car then you should stop buying
Yougo's.
I bought and brand new looking ten year old GMC 2 years ago for my wife, I have
done nothing to it except change the oil.
The freaking AC even still works.
Insn't technoligy wonderful? Tires now can last 100,000 miles, as well as
brakes.
Engines can easlly see 200k now days.
Radiators are fgood for the life of the car unless you bang it up. If someone
is selling an extended warrentee on a 2 year old car then it's a piece of ****,
or you have not learned how to shop for a car. Talk about a waste of money. A
used 2 year old car probably goes for 10, grand or so. for that money you can
buy a korean honda wannabe, brand new with a 10 year 100,000 warrentee.
Extended warrentees are a waste of money period.

Extended warranty is one of the biggest money makers for the car dealer.
Most people never use it. However, there are some cases where it makes
sense. (like yours) I usually manage to burn through the manufacturers
warranty AND the extended warranty before I get rid of a car. (my 98 Grand
Cherokee has 182,000+ miles on it right now)
